After reading The Kissing Hand by Audry Penn, the students learned through guided discovery what tools are in their table tubs (pencils, colored pencils, pencil sharpeners, crayons) as well as how to use and care for them. With these tools, they drew self portraits of how they felt on this first day of school. After reading the second story, A Pocket Full of Kisses, the students learned about glue sticks and proper care of them. They each created Chester Racoon, the main character in the Kissing Hand series, to put on top of their self portraits. These guided discoveries are designed to help children not only care for classroom materials but know that they belong to all of us and need to be respected. Every tool that is introduced for learning in the next two weeks will be carefully linked to a learning activity/project. Tomorrow...onward to scissors!😜
