Three Little Pigs Engineering Design Task

This week the kids participated in close readings of four different versions of the three little pigs story during Reading Workshop.  As the culminating activity, the students were given the following scenario during Science time:  Pretend that there was a fourth little pig.  The pig is walking down the road and comes across a man with a wagon filled with gumdrops and toothpicks. How could this pig use these materials to build a house strong enough to withstand the force of the wolf's mighty blow?  We pretended that the fan was the huff and puff from the wolf.  Each child had to test their design and explain why they thought that it worked.   The following are photos of what they designed.  Most met the challenge and the ones that did not learned from others' success and redesigned their houses.  It was sooooooo much fun!  Don't be surprised if they ask for you to buy gumdrops and toothpicks at your next grocery shopping trip!

Third Grade Reading Buddies

Elephant Toothpaste Anyone?

Our little scientists learned how to record predictions before an investigation and to draw observations to share with partners after the experiment was complete.

Reading Lots of Books

Today the little readers are taking home a book that they can all read.  It has the sight words "see" and "the" throughout the book.  Be sure they read it to you by placing their tracking fingers under the words.

We Are Scientists!

IToday the kids learned about what it is like to be part of a scientist meeting.  We discussed norms and expectations.  We read a story about what science is and conducted an investigation using baking soda, vinegar, a balloon, and a bottle.  The children shared their ideas on why the reaction occurred with "thinking partners".  Here are some photos of the kids participating in our first very successful scientist meeting.

Turkey Mania

What is better than a day filled with books about turkeys, a turkey craft, and an informational Let's Find Out Reader about turkeys.  Ask your child about the snood and the wattle.🤓

First 5 "Popcorn Words"

Today the kids were introduced to the first five high frequency words.  We are calling them "Popcorn Words" because they pop up the most frequently in our English language.  We will be practicing reading and writing these this week. Tomorrow, I will be sending home a list of the 25 words that they need to read by the end of Kindergarten.  Please begin practicing these words as well as reading and writing letters at home.  I am starting to see them all using invented spelling to write words and stories in school.  Exciting times ahead!
