Today the students completed their final task for our Weather and Climate unit. They engineered hats that would protect themselves from a weather condition of their choice using a paper plate as the base for the project. Paper, tape, scissors, pipe cleaners, yarn galore! They were so creative! These young thinkers learned about four of our Next Generation Science Standards during this task: Asking Questions and Defining Problems, Planning and Carrying Out Investigations, Constructing Explanations and Design Solutions, and Engaging in Argument Using Evidence on why their design would work for their chosen weather condition. Below are some photos that I took today. Tomorrow they will share their work with classmates in a "Scientist Meeting". We will end this engineering fun with a "Hat Parade" through the main office. More photos will come tomorrow!
These hats are incredible! What imaginations and creativity :)
